Nordarnøy kystfort

Once a strategic German military outpost, Nordarnøy Coastal Fort is today a popular destination for hikers, midnight sun seekers, and anyone interested in the wartime history of the Salten region.

Known locally as “Batteriet” (“The Battery”), Nordarnøy Coastal Fort is steeped in history. Built between 1941 and 1942 at the northern tip of Nordarnøy, it was strategically positioned as a German coastal artillery installation during World War II, overlooking the Bodø Peninsula.

Today, the same panoramic views make it one of the area’s most spectacular places to experience the midnight sun and the rugged beauty of Northern Norway’s coastline. With the Salten Fjord, Blixvær, Fleinvær and the dramatic Lofoten Wall on the horizon, visitors are met by an open and striking coastal landscape.

A marked hiking trail leads to the fort. The route follows the shoreline from the bridge across Arnøysundet, which connects Sørarnøy and Nordarnøy, or from the end of the main road on Nordarnøy. Both trailheads are clearly signposted.

The fort once included a range of military buildings that no longer remain, including a communications centre, detention facility, kitchen, administration offices, engine house, water reservoir, carpentry workshop, infirmary, officers’ mess, anti-aircraft positions and searchlight installations. Today, the command tower and two of the original artillery guns are still intact.
