Kvarven

Kvarven itself doesn’t stand out much, but perhaps that’s precisely why you gain so much by hiking up to it. It’s no wonder that Kvarven is the most visited summit in Kjerringøy.

Hike Description

This is an easy and pleasant hike through varied terrain. The trail winds its way uphill through birch forests and over boardwalks across marshy areas. Along the way, you’ll pass by Hestmoen, which is a suitable rest area equipped with benches and tables. The view unfolds as you reach the tree line. The majestic Strandåtind, the Steigen mountains, and the Lofoten wall captivate your gaze to the north and west, while Trolltind and the Sjunkhatten National Park catch your attention to the east. Below you, the white beaches and the trading post shine.

The trip is one of Salten Friluftsråds selected 55 attractive hikes in the region.

Getting to Kvarven

Follow county road 834 northwards from Bodø towards Kjerringøy. Take the ferry from Festvåg to Misten after about 25 kilometers of driving; the ferry ride lasts 10 minutes. After another 13 kilometers, you’ll arrive at Kjerringøy trading post. It’s possible to start the hike from here, making it a 5-kilometer longer round trip.

The most common approach is to follow the signs to the right towards Nevelsfjord, approximately 1 km after the trading post. Drive for 1 km, and you’ll find parking at Alsos Camping. If it’s full, you’ll find additional parking after another 2 km. Both starting points connect to the same trail after a few hundred meters uphill. Both routes are well-marked.

If you want to use public transportation, you can take a bus from Bodø city center to Alsos bus stop, with several daily departures. The journey takes about 1.5 hours, including the ferry crossing over Mistfjorden. It’s approximately a 3-kilometer walk from the bus stop to the starting point of the trail.

You can bring your bicycle for free on the bus if you want to cycle from the bus stop to the trailhead.
