Tour Description

Dunberget is more than just a hike through nature. This is a historical walk through a landscape shaped by generations, where natural beauty meets cultural heritage.

The route starts at Steigen Church. Park the car on the other side of the road from the church. From here, follow the farm road for a short distance until the trail veers left across a field and begins to ascend the hillside. Along the way, you’ll reach a scenic viewpoint with a bench – an ideal spot to rest and take in the stunning view of the fjord and lush surroundings.

The trail continues downhill toward Vollmoen, where some sections may be slippery, especially in wet weather. Safety ropes and steps have been installed to assist hikers.

Once at Vollmoen, the trail splits. Here you can either:

• Turn left and head down to the parking area at Vollmoen. From here you can walk along the road back towards your car next to the church.
• Turn right and walk over Steigsskaret towards Tivoli in Bø. It’s a bit longer, but a beautiful hike. The trail is one of the oldest ever registered in Northern Norway. If you choose this route, we recommend driving in separate cars and leaving one at the Tivoli parking lot. That way, you won’t have to walk all the way back to your starting point.

Getting to Steigen from Bodø

By car

Drive south from Bodø on the E6 to Tømmerneset, then turn off toward Steigen via road FV835. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours, including the Steigen Tunnel. Parking is available at Steigen Church, Vollmoen, and Tivoli in Bø.

By public transport

During summer, you can take the express boat from Bodø to Helnessund.

From Helnessund, connect by local bus to Steigen Church or Bø (see reisnordland.no for updated schedules). Plan the bus in advance to make sure it is operative on the time of your arrival.
