Hike Description

Børvasstindan is ingrained in the heart and soul of Bodø and its residents. Amidst sharp and occasionally challenging peaks, Per Karlsatind stands somewhat modestly towards the west. It might not be the most alpine, the highest, or the most spectacular peak in the range, yet it has the power to leave you breathless. Moreover, the summit is surprisingly accessible from the Coastal Route (Kystriksveien).

Per Karlsa is visited in all seasons and boasts a well-marked trail all the way to the summit. After just under 4 km and an ascent of about 1000 meters, you’ll understand why it’s a popular destination. With Bodø city spread out like a flat pancake to the north, it’s a stark contrast to turn around and gaze into the Åselidalen valley that splits the Børvasstindan range in two. Massive mountain walls descend into the U-shaped valley only to climb just as steeply on the other side. The midnight sun is seldom as beautiful as from this summit.

Getting to Per Karlsatind

Drive on national road 80 eastward from Bodø. Take a right onto county road 17 at the roundabout just after Tverlandet, about 20 kilometers from Bodø. Continue along county road 17 past Saltstraumen for another 10 kilometers. Park on the right side of the road by the sea, when you feel like the mountain is looming over you. The parking area might not be clearly marked. The marked trail starts 50 meters back on the road towards Saltstraumen. It’s well-marked all the way to the summit.

If you prefer to use public transportation, you can take a bus from Bodø city center or from Ørnes to the Mølnbukta bus stop. There are several daily departures. The journey takes about 50 minutes from Bodø and 1.5 hours from Ørnes. The trail starts at the bus stop.
