A journey in North Norwegian local food

New food and unfamiliar flavors are half the joy when you are traveling. In Bodø and Salten, you will find everything on the menu, from freshly cooked pollock on flatbread to exquisite dishes served on porcelain and white tablecloths.

One thing is for sure – whether you are on the beach, in the mountains, out on a boat, in a car, or on a city tour: when hunger strikes, we want food, and preferably good food. Although the reputation once claimed that the food options for travelers in Northern Norway were poor, fortunately, times have changed, and so has the food offerings.

Naturally, the best selection of restaurants, cafes, and other eateries can be found in and around the cities, but there are some hidden gems in and around Bodø and Salten.

Self-picking of berries

Take a trip to the idyllic Bjørklund farm. Here, you can buy locally produced food, enjoy coffee, and eat cinnamon buns. During the summer, you can also do “self-picking” of delicious raspberries and strawberries.

Local produced products

In Beiarn, you will find a fantastic local food outlet. At the “food house” in Trones, they have handcrafted delicacies for every taste. Here, you can find lefse and flatbread, fresh and matured cheeses from local goat and cow milk, reindeer meat, mustard, and roe caviar, to name a few.

Food in the great outdoors

Hege’s culinary experiences offer a dinner out of the ordinary. With a passion for local and unexplored food, the focus is on nature, culture, and cuisine. The food can be prepared and enjoyed anywhere, but preferably outdoors.

Kjerringøy

If you make the trip to Kjerringøy, you can have lunch at Kjerringøy Trading Post.

Alternatively, head all the way to the edge of the island to Kjerringøy Rorbu Center with the Utekjøkkenet (Outdoor Kitchen), Brygga Restaurant, and Rorbukaféen (Rorbu Café). Enjoy the evening sun by the quayside with a delicious dish.

Food in Bodø City

In Bodø, there isn’t a long distance between the various dining establishments, but it can still be a good idea to make reservations on the busiest evenings.

The quality of the city’s restaurants has significantly improved in recent years. You’ll find several places listed on the Star Wine list, offering casual fine dining and delicious dishes made from local ingredients. Most places also offer takeout.

Bodø offers something for everybody. However, remember, if you plan to dine out, it’s a good idea to book a table.

Breakfast and lunch

Start the day off with a fantastic breakfast from Brødrene Berbusmel, featuring freshly baked bread, delicious cheeses, freshly squeezed juice, and sweet temptations. They also offer daily soup specials, sandwiches, and baked goods.

Brødrene Berbusmel also has its own delicatessy section where you can purchase a variety of local and house-made products.

Restaurants in the city centre

In recent years, Bodø has grown as a culinary destination, and a visit to one of the city’s restaurants will enhance your experience.

At Bjørk, you can enjoy a cozy and informal atmosphere with a large and diverse menu suitable for lunch, dinner, and evening guests.

Hundholmen Brygghus welcomes you as you are, offering flavorful food and home-brewed beer.

Txaba serves exciting dishes based on the spanish tapas and great wine.

Sweet temptations and champagne

At Craig Alibone Pâtisserie & Champagneria, in the delightful oasis with pink walls, oak beams, and macarons, you can savor coffee and champagne along with sweet temptations. In the colorful display, you will find handmade chocolates, macarons, croissants, and other impressive pastries that will make your mouth water just at the thought.
