What to do in Meløy

See and do

Experiences are abundant in Meløy, and the absolute biggest attraction in the municipality is without a doubt, Svartisen. Engabreen spills down the mountainside and is easily accessible and can be experienced up close.

Svartisen – Glacier

Svartisen is one of the largest attractions in the Salten region. The Engabreen glacier arm is easily accessible in Meløy and can be visited by most people.

The glacier is a fantastic sight in itself, and with its icy blue tone, it lies like a blanket down the mountainside. It is precisely from its color that the glacier has gotten its name. The old origin of the word “Svartis” describes the characteristic deep blue color of the ice, in contrast to the white snow.

To visit the glacier, you drive to Holand in Meløy municipality. Here you can park your car and take the “Isprins” shuttle boat across Holandsfjorden to Engenbreen.

Did you know that Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier and the most accessible in Europe?
